2. 0-2 Overview of Lyrics Version of the Adagio Movement of Concerto of Aranjuez
Writer Mao Sheng
The second movement of the Aranjuez Concerto was sung with lyrics for the first time - Richard Anthony
The second movement of Concerto of Aranjuez was adapted into a jazz version for the first time - Miles Davis

The theme melody in the second movement of the  Concerto of Aranjuez was as early as 1959 adapted into a jazz version. This adaptation used a trumpet as the solo instrument, is the American masterful jazz trumpeter Miles Davis (1926-1991) in collaboration with the Canadian jazz conductor and composer Gil Evans (1912-1988). This piece was included in the album "Sketches of Spain" (Sketches of Spain, 1960). It has been one of the classics of jazz. A few years Later, in 1967, French lyricist Guy Bontempelli (1940-2014) added French lyrics to the adagio movement, and it was sung by Richard Anthony (1938-2015). This French lyrics version is called "Aranjuez, mon amour", Aranjuez, my love. The song topped the best-selling charts that year and was covered by many singers. It is said that Brigitte Bardot, the French film sex goddess at the time, also sang this song. In the same year, there were also various adapted versions of this work and various lyrics versions in Spanish, Italian, German, etc., that were widely sung. 1967 seems to be the explosive year when the second movement of the concerto was adapted, lyrics, and sung. The reasons for this remain to be studied. Several famous pop orchestras, Le Grand Orchestra de Paul Mauriat, Caravelli, Raymond Lefèvre et son grand orchestra, and Franck Poser Pourcel et son Grand Orchestra, etc. all released recordings of this work that few years. But at the time Rodrigo was very disapproving of such adaptations and even tried to prevent their release. However, Rodrigo's opposition seemed to be ineffective, and he later compromised. This concert is an original classical music but is well-known for its various non-classical adaptations. Later, Rodrigo's wife, Victoria Kamhi (1905-1997), also contributed her French poem, which became one of the often sung versions.

When it comes to the various adaptations of the second movement's adagio theme over the years, it is truly remarkable. The styles of the adapted compositions span classical, bel canto, Latin, flamenco, jazz, rock, lyrical, rap, electronic, fado, and more, leaving no genre unexplored. In terms of performance form, there are solo, ensemble, concerto, double concerto, large orchestra, small band, and everything in between.

Regarding instruments, in addition to the common pairings of guitar, piano, violin, and trumpet, the panpipe is also a frequently featured solo instrument. One can also encounter rare and unconventional instrument pairings, such as xiao with guitar, guitar with African drums, ruan with orchestra, church organ with orchestra, shakuhachi with electronic clarinet,  all-guitar orchestra, and all-brass orchestra. The list is going on. The diversity is truly overwhelming, illustrating the widespread popularity of this composition.

Many superstar musicians, whether classical or popular, have performed this piece numerous times throughout their careers, including artists like Nana Mouskouri and Andrea Bocelli. It seems that heavyweight vocalists worldwide must include this piece in their repertoire, as evident in performances by artists like Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Sarah Brightman, and many more.

Several easy-listening orchestras, such as Paul Mauriat and André Rieu orchestras, have embraced it as a classic performance piece, frequently presenting it with varied interpretations. As an enthusiast, curating and enjoying such a rich array of resources is a delightful pursuit. Thanks to the convenience of modern internet access, one can find exquisite and diverse performances from around the world.

Currently, I have compiled materials related to the lyrics renditions of the second movement. I have identified more than 50 versions in different languages, with ongoing discoveries. Even within the same language, there are variations in lyrics, and each version is given a distinct title. I will introduce and share these variations in subsequent articles on this website.
